National Strength and Conditioning Association - Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA)

The National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) examination is organized and conducted by National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). The NSCA-CPT Certification is the first nationally accredited certification in the fitness industry.

The NSCA-CPT credentialing is designed specifically for professionals who work one-on-one with their clients in a range of environments. The NSCA-CPT examination measures the attainment and application of knowledge and skills required to train both active and sedentary individuals.

Exam eligibility


• You must be at least 18 years old.
• You must hold at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
• You must hold a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. It should not be an online course. The Certification course must involve practical training and  performing CPR either on a person or a dummy.
• You also must have a current Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) certificate. The course must included hands-on training as well as a skills performance evaluation.
• The CPR and AED certificates must have been awarded by a recognized and reputable provider such as the American Heart Association or the National Safety Council.
• Both the CPR and AED certificates must be valid on the examination date.

Exam details


• The examination is available in pen-and-paper format as well as the computerised format.
• The computerised examination is offered at about 150 different sites across the U.S.
• The pen-and-paper format exam is offered in predetermined sites and dates all over the world.
• You are given 3 hours to complete the exam.
• There are 140 scored multiple choice questions.
• There are 10 non-scored multiple choice questions.
• The non-scored questions are not distinguished from the scored questions in the examination; hence it is imperative that you answer all questions carefully.
